Creado en 1998, por Jared Leto y su hermano Shannon, Kevin Drake and Solon Bixler dejaron la banda y en su reemplazo ingresaron Tomo Milicevic y Matt Wachter.
Su primer albun llamado tambien 30 seconds to mars, fue lanzado en el 2002 y vendio un poco mas de 100,000 unidades.
Su segundo album A Beutiful Lie fue lanzado el 30 de Agosto de 2005 y vendio mas de 300,000 unidades.
El 31 de Agosto de 2006 la banda gano el premio MTV2 Award por el video "the kill" en los MTV Video Music Award.
Empezando Octubre la banda a comenzar el tour "Welcome to the Universe" auspiciado por MTV2.
